In modern practical terms, it is "private initiatives for public good, focusing on quality of life"—balancing the social-scientific aspect emphasised in our century, with the long-traditional and original humanist core of the word's ancient meaning. This formulation distinguishes it from business (private initiatives for private good, focusing on material prosperity) and government (public initiatives for public good, focusing on law and order)

Architect in the House is an innovative scheme run by Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity, and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). We match homeowners with a local RIBA/RIAS/RSUA chartered architect who has donated an hour of their time for a design consultation. In exchange, the homeowner can make a suggested donation of £40 to Shelter. In 2012, Rockwool is the title sponsor of this scheme.
